I think Birth of a Nation in 1915 is generally perceived to be the birth of real movie making, and it predates the stock market crash by nearly 15 years. What DID change in the depression was the nature of movies- they become more upbeat (to the point of saccharine sweetness in many cases, ugh). Horror sometimes goes out of fashion when a populace is faced by real horror- so I would expect light "fun" escapism to make a resurgence. (assuming things really get horrible- I don't find things all that horrible yet, since I am comparing now to real holocausts, and famines, depressions and real disasters, what we have gone through here, in the US, considering the size of our population, is miniscule- except in our own minds, of course.)
