Talk about being a celebrity... While a POW, McCain did receive special treatment because of his father, especially (ironically enough) in Hanoi, where he likely would have been left for dead had his captors not learned of his identity. Of the 591 POWs who came back to the US in the first months of 1973 as part of Operation Homecoming, only one was offered an extraordinary 13-page spread in US News & World Report in which to write about his experience, thereby launching a national profile. This certainly wasn't because of McCain's own rank, flight record, or length of imprisonment.
