The assertion was "The American quality of life has been going downhill since 1975." I could have said "The American quality of life has not been going downhill since 1975.", but in context "nonsense" covers that, and makes a stronger statement about it. The author than went on to make a few arguments for his assertion. I quoted and responded to those arguments. Using a number of the criteria that he selects things have gotten better. Other criteria he uses are not measures of overall economic well being, and I showed why they aren't.
