The Explorer Is Landing: Scientific-Atlanta to Feature New Applications, Consumer Deployments and a Celebrity Appearance at the Western Show

ATLANTA, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- At December's Western Cable Show, Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA - news) plans to generate plenty of buzz: In addition to a special appearance by Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the company will showcase commercial launches of its Explorer® 2000 set-top and digital interactive network.
Visitors to Scientific-Atlanta's booth #2345 at the Western Show will have the opportunity to see how subscribers are using Explorer set-tops and view demonstrations of a variety of digital interactive applications that will enable broadband operators to generate additional revenue.
Scientific-Atlanta will host two news conferences at the show: one to announce an alliance with a major computer industry company and one to announce a new network technology for delivering digital interactive services. For the convenience of the media, an electronic press kit will be available at sciatl.com to relay information and photographs beginning December 1 and continuing through the show.
Following are highlights of activities Scientific-Atlanta has planned for the show:
-- "Buzz" in the Booth Famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin, whose Apollo XI team proclaimed "The Eagle has Landed," will make a celebrity appearance Thursday, December 3, from 2:30 to 5:30 pm to celebrate Scientific-Atlanta's show theme, "The Explorer Is Landing." Aldrin will be available for photographs.
-- Win A Trip To Space Camp Three lucky visitors to the Scientific-Atlanta booth will win a trip for two to NASA's acclaimed Space Camp. During the all-expenses-paid weekend program, the winners will experience astronaut training, feel the effects of weightlessness and even fly a simulated space shuttle mission.
-- Play The Network Upgrade Game Everyone's a winner when they play Scientific-Atlanta's Network Upgrade Game. Booth visitors will have an opportunity to win a prize while learning about network architecture upgrade paths through a fun simulation game.
-- News Conferences Scientific-Atlanta will host a news conference to announce a new alliance partner Wednesday, December 2, from 11:00 to 11:30 am. A new digital network technology will be unveiled at a news conference Wednesday, December 2, from 5:00 to 5:30 pm. Both news events will take place in Room A 11/12 in the Anaheim Convention Center.
-- Digital Interactive Services Scientific-Atlanta has received purchase orders or commitments for its interactive digital network from 14 cable operators in the United States and Canada, representing more than 75 systems which have more than 16 million cable subscribers. These cable operators include Time Warner, TCI, Cox, Comcast, Adelphia, Marcus Cable, Rogers and Videotron.
-- Members of the CreativEdge® Developers' Program, designed to help third-party application developers test, integrate and launch new interactive services for the Explorer 2000 set-top, will exhibit new applications in the booth. The CreativEdge Developers' Showcase will include demos of instant video-on-demand (VOD), Internet over TV, e-commerce solutions and in-home networking via the cable set-top box.
-- Scientific-Atlanta will demonstrate the role of the Explorer 2000 in passing high-definition television (HDTV) signals to a TV set. Engineers will discuss the company's end-to-end HDTV solution, including the Explorer set-top with full IEEE 1394 FireWire interface.
-- Scientific-Atlanta will participate in CableNet's "Living Room of the Future" in Hall D of the Anaheim Convention Center, demonstrating HDTV, VOD and an advanced interactive program guide. Additionally, a point of deployment (POD) module will be on display in the CableNet "Retail" area.
-- Cost-Effective Network Solutions As part of a comprehensive, end-to-end broadband network solution, Scientific-Atlanta will be demonstrating a new technology that enables broadband operators to efficiently upgrade their network capacity to support new services, without the usual cost premiums.
