There was nothing pristine about the bigotry my maternal ancestors faced when they set foot on the shores of the US in the 1860s. Difference is they didn't whine about it..instead they immediately learned English(spoke Gaelic), set to work educating themselves and teaching their children to love this country---to consider the ignorant source of any cultural prejudice they might encounter. Within two generations their descendants were part of the fabric of the US..engaged in business, medicine, education and military service. Therein lies the crucial difference---they never considered themselves victims in any way, and always remembered the "altitude they could achieve in the US was determined by their attitude"--focus on the postive, not the negative...be proud of the remarkable history of this great nation.
