If the US government was a company it would have competition, and if it managed its finances as poorly as it has in the face of competition (and without the ability to force "customers" to pay) than it would probably be beyond "close to insolvent", it would have been insolvent long ago.

But it does have the power to tax, and it doesn't face a competitive environment for its "sale" of its "services". In the context of the government having the power to tax, its health is like that of a parasite, as long as "the parasite" doesn't take so much as to leave the host unhealthy it should be ok. Taking in this case would be spending, not just the amount taxed. Spending has been growing an an unfortunate clip, but its still below the amount that would seriously threaten the health of "the host"
