Market Wrap

Hit the Road Jack

Sleeping with the enemy is never a prudent stratagem. That is, unless you're Sharon Stone in"Basic Instinct." So Dell Computer's move to send Digital Equipment Corp.'s services group hiking was a necessary move, distancing Dell from rival Compaq.

In a market of ever-competitive computer prices, Dell announced Thursday that it would not be renewing its service and support contract with Digital. With that bridge burned, Dell is searching for a new organization to assume the vacant service role.

Dell's CEO Michael Dell met with analysts Thursday to discuss the road that lies ahead for the computer maker. While other OEMs feel the pinch from the Asia crisis and falling PC prices, Dell maintains a strong market position through its build-to-order manufacture strategy, which allows for relatively small inventories.

Dell will try to stay on the technological forefront by moving from so-called end-of-life products and shipping only Pentium II computers. Dell closed Thursday up 1 15/16 at 67 11/16.
