Alien, it's interesting that you should mention cheerleaders pushing a stock or dragging it down. There is a discussion on the Dell thread concerning an article in the WSJ that inaccurately portrayed Dell's desktop growth as being below industry average. This apparently came from an analyst (Kumar) who is incapable of doing simple arithmetic, yet his spurious conclusion was repeated without comment. At the same time, the paper hyped CPQ and falsely claimed that it would have good earnings (by ignoring all of those "one-time" charges I've been railing about!) in spite of the fact that it is clear that they will lose money. So, even the newspapers pick up on this cheerleading theme that is initiated by the "analysts" working for retail brokerages.
