Qwest lays off 30, will move 320 other Minnesota jobs

Published Jan 11 2002

Qwest Communications said Thursday it will eliminate 30
Twin Cities jobs and transfer 320 other jobs from Minnesota to
Iowa and Colorado.

The changes are part of a consolidation of its call centers that
take orders for new service and handle requests for repairs.
Qwest spokesman Bryce Hallowell said the 320 union workers
will have the option to transfer to Des Moines or Denver, but
they will lose their jobs if they don't move. The other 30
employees are being laid off.

"We're trying to consolidate in a tough economic environment
while maintaining a high level of customer service," Hallowell
said.

The 30 layoffs are part of the 7,000 jobs that Denver-based
Qwest said in December it would eliminate within its 14-state
local telephone service area, which includes Minnesota. Qwest
also said last September that it would eliminate 4,000 jobs
within the 14 states.

The 30 layoffs and the 170 jobs being moved to Des Moines are
the result of a consolidation of call centers that take orders for
telephone services in all 14 states, Hallowell said. The 150 jobs
being moved to Denver are from a Twin Cities call center that
handles requests for telephone repairs.
