OK, you asked for it. So I will tell you. Any Canadians on this thread will appreciate the story, although it might make them angry at first.
My Fiance's father was Director of American Celanese (sp?) Corp., her Uncle was our equivalent Chief Justice of the Canadian Supreme Court. Premier Troudoue (sp?) was a close personal friend of the family. We were taking turns going back and forth between Quebec and S. Fla. (EXPENSIVE indeed considering each of us made the trip TWICE A MONTH). So, I says to her, why dont I apply for a Fiance Visa for you and you just move in with me in Fla. She agreed, so I said just tell INS who your family is and we can skip the red tape. She says, (this girl was very high class, educated and moral type) no, I want to go through the process as an ORDINARY CANADIAN CITIZEN to see how the USA treats Canadians. Well, they treated her like shit (I learned that they do this to DISCOURAGE foreigners from marrying American Citizens thinking many of these marraiges are for the sole purpose of gaining Citizenship in USA). Anyhow, without going into the long details one weekend they REALLY PISSED HER OFF. She called me from Montreal and we were on the phone NON STOP for 6 HOURS. I think I learned a lot of French cuss words that night. haha. I had some political connections myself and told her to wait till 10:00am and I would call the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee (whom I knew) and file a complaint. I did just that and he put me through via a 3 way phone call to the Chairge de affairs (sp?) in Montreal who started out being SHITTY until I told him who my fiance was, at which time he said HOLY SHIT (quote) why didnt she tell us? Well, before the USA could rectify the situation my fiance went to her Dad and Uncle, who went to Pierre Troudeau who had the Canadian Govt file an official letter of protest. We ended up APOLOGIZING and a CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION from the USA went to her home and gave her a GREEN CARD ON THE SPOT. Too late, she told me she could not live in a country that would treat her countrypeople so. I had a career and said I cant move to Canada, that was the end of our engagement. A LOT of people got fired over the incident. Later, I became engaged to a Filipina who was in this country illegally (came in legally but her work papers expired) I told her dont worry, I think I can fix it. I goes down to the Miami office (who knew of my situation before) and told the head of the office, remember how your people screwed up my engagement years earlier, well if you do it again its gonna be WORSE. He said BRING HER DIRECTLY TO ME. I did and THAT DAY SHE WAS ISSUED A GREEN CARD!!! So, its not what you know, its WHO you know. haha. JDN
