When was the last time we actually had to defend this country? The Civil War? (Even Japan was no threat to our mainland)

Iraq. Afghanistan. WWII. Some would argue that both Vietnam and Korea were in defense of "our" country.

To say that Japan was no threat to our mainland is an utterly stupid remark. I'm certain that everyone believed they were no threat to Pearl Harbor the day before the bombing.

The Japanese actually tried attacking us with the release of thousands of incendiary hot air balloons, which only killed a few people here, but given time might well have worked. More importantly, they had plans to use the H8K bombers attack California and Texas, and plans coordinated with German subs in the Atlantic. While these plans were killed later in the war and never resurfaced, it is an ignorant claim to suggest that our mainland wasn't at risk. Besides, who in hell would differentiate between an attack on our mainland versus Hawaii, Alaska or anywhere else?
