Hi Steve

A Chief Information Officer (CIO)is not a Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Cowpland needs to find a darn good CIO too.

I said it in this post:
exchange2000.com

In a top-down company like Corel, the CFO has a primary responsibility to educate the boss constantly regarding the financial consequences of ongoing business.

O'Reilly said much the same in the Ottawa paper. He was just nicer about it:
<<"One of my first initiatives is improving the internal information systems," said the new CFO,...>>

<<Mr. O'Reilly also believes that Mr. Cowpland's days of running Corel as a one-man show are over.

"I certainly agree that Mike Cowpland is one who likes to move very quickly and make decisions very quickly," said Mr. O'Reilly.

"The types of changes that I see coming, which I think include bringing me on board, indicate some maturity in the management.>>

<<"If Mike has been criticized for running too much on his own, I don't see that (happening) in the future.">>

If you go back a ways to when Bean and I were playing CEO. He wanted to bring in a new team. I wanted an new CFO first. O'Reilly seems like my kind of CFO. Nothing against Chuck Norris now. Don't get me wrong. He tried and tried but the communications link between him and Cowpland was clearly broken and he simply was not allowed to be effective.

O'Reilly appears to have a good handle on the problem.
My kind of candidate for the CFO/VP of Finance job.

Put your stock back under that mattress for a while longer.

Leo
