I am more inclined to think that most of it did not really exist except on paper, but the percepton that one has part of the dream makes one confident to spend. Given that that this has gone away and probably won't be back in our life time, one feel poorer in comparison.

There was another article in the paper this week about people turning to investing in art as opposed to stocks. We all know where the art market went when the Japanese bubble busrt. Funny how people never learn. Though on the other hand you don't have to worry about doctors numbers, just fake art pieces.
