The circus that sprung up around the election was massive. It was impossible to step outside without stepping in a pile of crap left by one type of animal or another. Many, many otherwise rational people saw the clowns, the acrobats, and the bright colors and smelled the greasy food shacks and decided to wander over for a closer look. They, of course, quickly fell under the influence of the evil ringmasters. We few who held fast in our bunkers could only watch helplessly, mourn their loss, and hope that they might one day escape after the circus died back down to its normal level of sinister appeal.

Or something like that...
