$800 an acre for desert?

I've seen those auctions, and I think it's bizarre. One can buy high-quality, fertile, income-producing farmland, suitable for beans or corn, in the Midwest for $2K-$3K an acre. And this is after a run-up in farmland prices over the past 5 years.
