The free software is akin to a catalog in my book. The only catalog costs I allowed on the balance sheet when I was an auditor were for those not shipped, still current, and due to be shipped within a short-term (1-2 yrs) future period. Additionally, the client needed support that they received a volume discount which was the reason to 'buy in advance of use'. A might conservative, but proper.

Let's look at free software. If its in stock, then I'd allow that quantity's cost on the balance sheet (prepaid catalogs). If its out the door, then one would have to make an argument on the matching principal, but when did this ever come into play with marketing programs???? No Way ... if its out the door, its got to be expensed!

What contracts did you sell to create your bear spread, what date, what was AOL stock then? Interested if you care to share ... understand if you don't.
