Time will tell. My guess is it will neither hurt nor help. That is one mess that seems almost impossible to solve.

Hamas is already claiming that the visit with Carter gives them credibility. I just don't see how you can make a statement that it won't hurt; it already has.

The official posture of the US is, and has been for years, that it doesn't negotiate with terrorists. Yet, this visit, from the Hamas point of view, is specifically designed to make it appear that the US is negotiating with them.

It is damned harmful, and even were it not, Jimmy Carter ought to have the gumption not to act against the State Dept., even if he disagrees with their position.

I cannot remember an ex-president behaving so foolishly at any time in the past.
