Viacom to Get Liberty Media's Box Cable Service, WSJ Says

New York, May 18 (Bloomberg) -- Viacom Inc. will get Liberty Media Group's The Box, an interactive music-video cable service, and three Internet sites in exchange for giving Liberty a 10 percent to 15 percent stake in its new online music company, the Wall Street Journal said, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The transaction, which could be announced as early as today, would effectively eliminate all competition to Viacom's MTV, which has about 60 million subscribers compared with The Box's 8 million cable subscribers. Viacom will also get Sonic.Net.com, Streamland.com and Addicted to Noise.com in exchange for a stake in its new music venture, which would sell shares to the public in 12 to 18 months, the Journal said.

Viacom, the world's No. 4 media company, agreed to boost its cash offer this week for the 20 percent of Spelling Entertainment Group Inc. that it doesn't already own by 8.3 percent to about $185.3 million. (WSJ 5/18 B10 wsj.com)
