HOW TO MAKE MORE ROOM ON YOUR HARD DISK
When your hard disk fills up with files, it can be hard to know
what to delete. Jason's got three apps that make this process
easier--by giving you a graphical representation of your data.

Recently, one of my company's PC tech support staffers
came by to update the virus software on one of my
test machines, but he couldn't do so because
there wasn't enough space on the hard drive.
-
With the threat of a virus infection to motivate me,
I immediately set out to find a program that would make
room for the update.
-
What I needed was a disk-management program.
-
These apps give you a look at what's on your hard drive,
so you can see what you can do without.
-
I'm a visual person, so I like programs that show me
what's using up space. Then I can make room
by moving or deleting stuff that I no longer need.
... these three disk management programs give you
a graphical representation of your hard drive for easy
deletion of unnecessary files.
-
- i.Disk shows you your files in a tree-like structure,
so you can quickly see what's taking up the most space.
From there you can figure out which files you need
and which ones you don't.
To delete files, just trim that part of the tree.
-
- (Free/Windows) TreeSize Professional, my favorite
of the group, shows you a tree-like structure like i.Disk
but gives you more options for how you view it
and what you can do with the data.
This one has good sorting capabilities,
so you can quickly find what's eating up the majority
of your hard-drive space.
-
- (Shareware/Windows) SizeExplorer lets you view
the contents of your hard disk in a tree structure
or colorful graph. You can then sort your data
by a number of different criteria, including file type
and size.
