Hi Malcolm,
I'm in TO. To take a bus and subway combination from the eastern edge of Toronto (Westhill area of the old Scarborough, lamentably we're amalgamated) in order to get to a customer where I would work for the entire day it takes from 90 minutes to 2 hours on bus and subway, and that's only Young and Eglinton. Now imagine when I need to make it to daycare or a kid's lesson also. I'm of the opinion public transit just does not work except in simplistic cases and likely those folks are already taking transit. In my neighbourhood (on my street), except of course for the one fellow that is a TTC driver I know the occupations of most folks on my street and driving is the only practicable solution in say 80% of the cases ;o) We would need so many lifestyle changes and decentralisation of business, and a rigidly structured environment that I it will never be anymore than a huge money wasting pipedream IMO. BTW by car (small economical Mazda Protegé) it's 25 to 40 minutes. In summer when kids are in one of the numerous parks and recreation day camps it is impossible without a car to pick children up on time using transit.

Interestingly when we moved to the east end transportation was much better. My wife works at Sick Kids. There were lots of go trains including numerous express trains. The schedule has been bastardized to accomadate the non metro suburbs at least in the east. People in Whitby 20 mins east of us now have better service. She has had her choices limited and 20 minutes added on to the trip.

regards
Kastel

Besides how on earth would Big Box stores survive :o)
