You need to read between the lines on Cisco's statement, not above or below the lines.

Cisco is being polite and practicing good corporate etiquette in their statement. Cisco won't slam the door in the face of a neutral party like CIEN because they don't know if they will partnering in the future with the company that acquires CIEN, etc. Cisco is smart to not come out and say "we wouldn't touch CIEN with a 10 foot pole". The rule of etiquette here is for CISCO to disarm the rumor (based on their intentions), protect their own stock, and not burn any bridges.

Try looking at the situation in a personal way. If a woman approached you to ask for a date and you just wanted to be casual friends, would you say to her "No way, I'd never date you 'cause I don't want to be seen with you after 5 o'clock" Nope. You'd probably soften your response or risk being threatened by a Monica Lewinsky type. <G>
