Unfortunately most of my trading is done through IRA and moving money via transfers takes a long time. My personal account holds mostly Intel purchased so long ago I can't afford the taxes if I sell! One of the little tricks brokers use is to take as long as possible to do this , meanwhile hanging on to your account. Actually when I chose Schwab, I was paying higher prices than most discount brokers for what I thought would be better service. They do furnish a lot of useful reports on demand, and the service has been good when I could reach a human being. The real problem is that they have been stingy and/or incompetent in their computer services department. This problem has steadily worsened over the last several months. They will pay a price for this, since I'm sure I'm not the only one who will take my account elsewhere. They have been getting bad press on CNBC and SI.I don't think Schwab management is aware of the seriousness of the problem.
I probably will go with H&Q, but I'm open to suggestions, especilly from anybody who has a really knowledgeable broker. Most are basically salesmen or order takers, which is fine if the price is right, but at full commission schedule I would like more.
