Poll shows Obama ahead with N.J. Democrats April 30, 2008 TRENTON, N.J. - Support among New Jersey Democrats in the presidential race appears to be shifting to Barack Obama. A Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey poll finds 45 percent of the Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents surveyed would like to see Obama get the party's nomination compared to 38 percent for Hillary Clinton. Clinton beat Obama in the state's Democratic primary in February by a 10-point margin. Nearly 40 percent of the Democrats polled say the continuing battle between the presidential candidates will damage the party's chances in November. The survey shows Republican John McCain would lose to either Democrat in the Garden State. The telephone survey of 803 adults was conducted between April 24-28 and has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. newsday.com
