Tempting theory, but I think for the Clintons such a scheme would have presented far too great a risk. They couldn't be sure it would work, and indeed things were looking pretty bad for Bill at the beginning of the week.

But I do begin to feel that "this was too well orchestrated to be serendipity". Goldberg's apparently now bragging about having taken a more active role than she previously claimed, and who exactly did make those calls to the Rutherford Institute? Tripp? And who is connected in exactly what way with Jones's lawyers? Clearly Monica had been "telling all" to Tripp for some time. Is it possible that Tripp, Goldberg and others decided to use Lewinsky for their own ends? It would seem that Tripp was encouraging Monica, perhaps hoping to get as much as possible on tape. Did she believe there really was an affair? Who knows?

Just another hypothesis. Hey, this is fun...
