Jerry, I HAVE talked to them on several occasions about the problem (and there are quite a few past posts on this thread, too). There may be something in the fragmentation idea, but the fundamental problem is some flaw in the implementation of the 16-bit WOW virtual machine environment under NT (which perhaps is indeed triggered by fragmentation).
I have had the dern thing crash repeatedly, get disgusted, go to bed, and the next morning it runs through without a hitch. To me this speaks more toward virtual memory handling rather than fragmentation. The WOW VM has a timeout so that it goes away completely and restarts from zero after a while. This usually fixes it for the moment.
So sometimes you can just ignore your problems for a while and they go away! <GG>
Theoretically the setting I gave you should make this cleanup happen for every 16-bit app you run, but it doesn't seem to do so entirely.
All my files are in an NTFS partition (7 gigabytes, actually). At todays prices, you can be 8 gigs of disk space for 300 bucks; maybe a backup is easier than you think.<g>
BTW, the Random House Unabridged Dictionary is a 16-bit app I find near essential that has the same problem, and the same fix.
Good luck,
