Analysts widely forecast the Fed to bump up the fed funds overnight bank lending rate by a quarter percentage point to 6.0 percent, which would be the second rate increase this year. It is expected to amplify that move by also raising the less-significant discount rate by a quarter point to 5.5 percent.

Fed watchers expect further rate rises in the months ahead. The Fed has already increased the fed funds rate four times, by a total of one percentage point, since June of last year.
