I was there. The best things about it were the in-person appearance of Sugar Ray Leonard and the free coca cola.
Predictably, the NDS vs Domain Services shoot-out was a rather contrived affair, heavily slanted in Novell's favour due in no small part to the fact that Microsoft didn't show (did anyone really expect them to?).
That said, however, Novell did a pretty good job at demonstrating to a heavily biased audience why NDS is a far superior product.
Perhaps I'm in the minority here but I don't believe a company with $1.3 billion in the bank and a user base of 60 million is simply going to disappear or get taken over.
With ex HP boss John Young and super salesman Joe Marengi at the helm Novell now has pretty strong leadership and appears prepared to back its claims to the intranet marketplace with marketing clout.
The launch of IntraNetware and GroupWise 5 last week is said to have cost Novell around $12 million and, in the words of senior director of Novell's distributed networks business unit, Willy Donahoo:
"There will no more stealth marketing at Novell - we are now advertising in the press and on the Web in a big way."
The message that Novell wants everybody to hear loud and clear is that with IntraNetware, GroupWise 5 and ManageWise 2.1 product set, it is now the only company in the marketplace that can supply a complete intranet solution.
Whether the marketplace believes the message is another matter.
