Soooo....AXC now has the right to exclude others from using KM up to the year 2016, or 20 years from the date of application under current patent laws. The 1991 patent was issued under the old system and was scheduled to go off-patent in 2008, or 17 years from the date of issuance. Anybody have an idea on when the industry will shift from horizontal to perpendicular recording? I don't believe there has been even a spin-stand demo yet which means that it may be a few years away. Much of the work here is being done in Japan. Even IBM uses its IBM-Japan storage unit to do the basic R&D in this area.
