What makes Amtrak so slow is the quality of the track and the fact that freight trains have the right of way. In fact, freight train companies are doing all they can to force the feds to kill Amtrak. And GOPers are leading the charge.

Amtrak SHOULD be killed. There is no reason the business can't be run profitably; if they can't make it profitable, there is no reason it should be subsidized.

It is true the track won't support the kinds of speeds needed to make Amtrak profitable; however, Amtrak can move at a reasonable speed -- the problem is they make too many insignificant stops. For it to be reasonably fast transportation you have to use it between major cities only. One need only look at the schedule to see ths.
