Andy - Re:" LCD and flash card market? "

LCDs I do not follow.

As for Flash Card, there are at least 4 form factors competeing here.

Standard PCMCIA cards (Card bus) - The basic Flash Chip makers compete here - Intel, AMD, etc. This is not going to be a big market.

Compact Flash - (I hope I have this name right) - this is a little package designed to snap into a socket with elatomeric contacts. Intel developed this and has a group of competitors/customers lined up.

Mini-Card (? I may have this name wrong as well) - Championed by SanDisk. It is about half the size of the PCMCIA cards. It's drwaback is that it requires an on board controller to translate addresses and process the data and return it. So, it has an inherentlly higher cost structure. It's positive points are that it makes a large flash memory array lok like an IDE hard drive. So, interfacing to it is easy .

Some Japanese company (Toshiba?) anounced its own form factor. I don't know much about it.

Currently, I'd say SanDisk is out to a good head dstart. I believe Kodak (?) may have licensed its technology and signed on to use the mini-card in some digital cameras.

Long term, the simple Compact Flash may find good commercial acceptance - but it will be many months before this gets off the ground.

Early Winner - SanDISK
