A response like that is what makes me hesitate about the utility of getting together. Of course there is no Christian unity, and that should be considered an offense that should be rectified, if the church is the Body of Christ. My point is that the church is supposed to be unified in faith and doctrine. Even Martin Luther and John Calvin thought they were purifying the church, they had no intention of creating alternate churches. If one believes that there is a substantial tradition (of which the bible is the most important part, not the whole), then more than a power trip is involved in saying that substantial deviation from that tradition is heresy, and setting up another denomination on that basis is schism. However, as I said, ecumenism, and a search for common ground, is the current emphasis, and I think rightly so.
