Norddeutsche Sees Copper Demand Strong for Years (Update1)

By Tan Hwee Ann

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Norddeutsche Affinerie AG, Europe's largest copper refiner, said copper demand will remain strong for years led by Asian countries such as China.

``We have strong demand in copper, we have a growth rate in China of more than 9 percent,'' Chief Executive Officer Werner Marnette said today in an interview in Melbourne. ``The copper prices will stay high.''

Copper in London yesterday exceeded $8,000 a metric ton for the first time in more than seven months, raising speculation that the metal will break records set last year. Norddeutsche Affinerie is benefiting as Germany's economic growth buoys consumption, and last month said demand has kept rising even with higher prices.

The company would prefer copper prices of between $4,500 a ton and $5,500 a ton, Marnette said in the interview.
