The Iraqis certainly find no value in the UN as an organization which wil protect their interests.

I think the folks who habitually fuss about references to the UN are fussing up the wrong tree. The complaint is always the ineffectiveness and corruption of the UN and how could anyone embrace such a monstrosity. IMO, the folks who call upon the UN recognize what it is just as well as those who hate it so it's pointless to bash them for that. The reason they reference it is that the UN has one utility--it provides cover. It's arguable whether or not that cover is valuable or not so it would be constructive to argue that aspect of it. It's not constructive to assume that those who advocate UN involvement are idiots who think that the UN is competent. That question has long since been put to rest. The argument should be about the utility of UN cover.
