I'm wondering now whether "good journalism" is the flip side of cycle-of-violence or whether "existential struggle" is. The latter seems to me to fit your objection to the Post story as well as or better than the good-journalism explanation. Is existential-struggle the alternative to cycle-of-violence in your mind?

If I understand your question, you're asking if I think "existential struggle" is the better template. Yes it is better, though not the exact one. I think the best fit for the last three years is what the Israelis call it: the Terror War. The important thing to understand is that it is a war started by the Palestinian side when Arafat didn't like the deal at Taba and was threatened by insurrection within the Palestininians. So he decided to "escape by running ahead" as one Palestinian social scientist put it, but starting a war & thriving on the chaos.

If your framework is cycle of violence, you can never notice who is gaining ground. If your framework is war, then you can notice shifts in the conflict.

As for whether the struggle is existential, it certainly is for Hamas, PIJ, Al Aqsa, and Arafat himself, so it is an existential struggle now. For the Palestinians themselves the issue is more confused; about half say it's existential and half say it's a border struggle.
