Global stocks may have entered April with a whimper but they exited it with a bang.

Some markets turned in their best month in years as tentative hope took hold among investors that the financial crisis in the U.S. had stabilized.

For Japan's Nikkei Stock Average, up 11% in April, it was the best month since 1995, though the index is still off 9.5% for the year. In France and the United Kingdom, the benchmark indexes had their highest monthly gains since 2003. Indexes in Hong Kong and India recorded double-digit jumps.
