Back in the 1930s, both democrats and republicans were isolationists for the most part. Only FDR was biting at the bit and wanting to take on Hitler. The America of the 1930s was bogged down by a serious depression and Americans were sick of ongoing European conflicts. They did not want to fight in another European war.
