Todays problem is not a 1970s cartel problem. Its a lot deeper than that and involves the third world coming onboard 'the folks who needs more fuel train'. Personlly i believe we are in a speculative bubble with oil but i also wont be surprised to see Boone Pickens $150 prediction come true before the bubble starts to leak much. This is like when naz went from 4000 to 5000 in those last months before the crash. I think in the US there will be a dramatic decrease in usage starting a ffew months ago and building as we move into summer. I can afford gas at $4 but the number has shocked me into conserving in various ways. In an earlier post i think i saved about 140 gallons of gas per year by going to a closer coffee stop than i had been doing before. Yesterday instead of my wife and i driving separately to go to visit grandkids, she waited for me to finish work and i finished work a half hour earlier so we would take only one car. That saved about 2 gallons of gas. Folks who are really being hurt by rising prices are probably doing more because for them its necessity to do so.
