I'll make it quick because I'm running out to a dinner...

For oil, we have to figure out ways to use less. Conservation is key.

For food, let's start by trying to keep the U.S. based food companies like Monsanto from raping the land of developing nations with things like terminator seeds. Actions like that are the equivalent of making sure a person can't get a fishing pole, in your "teach a man to fish" analogy.
