I once interviewed the great Canadian film director Atom Egoyan fresh off an American press tour.

After the usual opening niceties, I started off with two related questions designed to uncover the layers of symbolism and representation in this very complex film. From talking to him before I knew he is an intellectually sophisticated person, and I hoped to get a few hundred words apiece in response to each question and we'd go from there.

In response, he swallowed a few times, looked at me, and said, "Don't you realize I just came off an American press tour where half the time the first of the four questions allotted to me was "Why did you call your film Erotica?". (Its name was Exotica.)

We had a good laugh, he got his brain in gear, and when his publicist came in at the end of the hour, Egoyan wanted to keep going, which of course the publicist wouldn't allow.

I have a number of interviews with Egoyan in the can -- if I make enough money in the stock market to retire I will try to turn them into a book.
