RESEARCH ALERT - General Instrument, Scientific

NEW YORK, Feb 22 (Reuters) - SoundView said on Monday its
telecommunications analyst, Truc Do, has started coverage of
General Instrument Corp. with a buy rating and
Scientific-Atlanta Inc. with a strong buy.
-- Do set a price target of $40 a share for General
Instrument and put earnings estimates for 1999 at $0.90 a share
and for 2000 at $1.13 a share.
-- General Instrument shares rose 2-13/16, or more than 8
percent, to 34-5/16 in late morning trading. The stock was one
of the top gainers on the New York Stock Exchange.
-- General Instruments, which sells broadband systems,
posted quarterly earnings that easily beat Wall Street
estimates on Feb. 10.
-- For Scientific-Atlanta, Do set a $45-a-share price
target.
-- He expects profits of $0.64 in fiscal 1999 and $1.10 in
fiscal 2000. Scientific-Atlanta's fiscal year ended on June 26
in 1998.
-- Scientific-Atlanta shares up 1-5/16 at 31-3/8.
