ANDOVER, MASS. (Sept. 23) BUSINESS WIRE -Sept. 23, 1996--FTP Software, Inc. today announced the Virtual IP (VIP) Internet Gateway for NetWare, which delivers a comprehensive range of features to allow network managers to easily troubleshoot, manage and analyze users' access to a company's intranet resources and the Internet.
The first product to be announced as a result of the recent acquisition of Firefox Communications, Inc., the VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare is a key offering of FTP's Virtual IP (VIP) Network Solutions Roadmap, also being announced today. With the addition of the VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare, FTP provides complete desktop-centric and server-centric TCP/IP solutions for NetWare clients.
The VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare creates a single centralized management, security and auditing interface, enabling network managers to easily control access to the resources on IP-based networks. The VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare provides an ideal migration path for NetWare companies as they transition to IP-based Internet or intranet services and offers a complementary solution to the company's OnNet(R) family of IP connectivity products. The VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare requires only one IP address and supports all of OnNet's client applications, including Mail OnNet and FTP. As their users develop a need for dedicated access to IP services or for advanced applications, such as mobile use and the NFS-client, network managers can easily add OnNet's IP stack to the users' IPX-based desktop.
"As NetWare users' demand for IP-based services and networks increase, network managers are faced with the challenge of deploying a solution that can be easily managed and audited as well as provide security," said Peter Simkin, chief technology officer at FTP Software. "FTP's VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare puts control back in the hands of the network manager by enabling centralized management, security, and comprehensive event reporting."
The VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare allows all installation, configuration and management procedures to be handled directly from the server. It requires no reconfiguration of existing Novell networks. The Gateway's simple installation preserves corporate investments in network hardware and software. Security and Fault Tolerance Functionality
The VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare provides natural firewall protection at the server level and controls access to the Internet or intranet hosts according to a set of rules configured centrally by the NetWare administrator. Security determined by the NetWare users and groups, and not by the workstation. For example, when a NetWare user logs in, the Gateway identifies the NetWare group to which the user belongs, and allows or denies Internet access as defined regardless of which NetWare workstation the user is logged in to.
In addition, the VIP Internet Gateway offers Communication Fault Tolerance which allows a second NetWare server to be loaded with the same copy of the Gateway without license violation. This secondary server monitors the primary server's status and if the primary server fails, the secondary server automatically becomes active with no administrator intervention. Installation, Administration and Reporting Functionality
FTP's VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare also provides network administrators with centralized auditing tools to monitor network activity such as tracking the type of transaction taking place, the application being used, and the length of transaction time. These auditing tools enable managers to examine traffic loads and determine if a user is abusing privileges.
The Windows-based Auditing and Reporting Tool enables the system administrator to view the historic events reported by the communications server software and it displays that data in a number of tabular or graphical views. Events can be analyzed by user activity application usage, successful connections, prevented or failed connections, and utilization by day of the week, hour of the day and duration of connections. Pricing and Availability
FTP's VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare is shipping September 30. Pricing for the VIP Internet Gateway for NetWare is $1,055 for a five (5) user license. About FTP Software, Inc.
