Thrace was north of Greece.

Alexander was born north of Greece.

Nowhere near Persia.

That's why the Greeks and Persians were miffed by being lumped into the same basket as the people of Macedonia. There was a sense that Greece and Persia were the cultural centers of the world and they couldn't understand how their northern neighbor managed to take over both regions. To have the Romans conquer Alexander's world and beyond was even a bigger blow to their sensibilities.
