scname: Chevron and Mobil have been there in a big way since about 1993. Chapparall Resources(a US Co.) has big joint venture with Kazak govt co. to develop Karakuduk field in western part of country.Canadian Occidental(Canoxy) has joint venture with giv't Co in central part, called Turgai Basin, and also Kumkol field in central part. Exxon is bidding for an 85% stake in a Kazak producer called Aktytubinskneft, which operates fields called Zhanazhol and Kenkiyak near the Russian border. Think I read that BP is also in Kazakstan, but can't remember for sure. Japanese and Koreans are now arriving in a big way, according to industry journals, and are interested in gold as well as oil, also Chinese. Chevron has the biggest footprint of anybody, according to what I read. AIPN apparently sort of slipped in between the big boys. How? Who knows? Somewhat like HEC in Colombia. Kazakstan is a huge, very oil-rich , mineral-rich place. Big political risk, but the whole world, including China, and us, and Europe and Japan, needs that oil.Iran is next door, and has dealt herself in. It is why Russia was fighting in Checnya, etc, etc..
