thread,

here's an interesting tip from norton system works that applies whether you run their software or not...

And now for today's tip...

CHANGE YOUR BEHAVIOR TO REDUCE SYSTEM CRASHES

Does this sound familiar? You've just finished writing a three-page
document and are about to save it when you decide to spell-check it
first. The result? A system hang-up.

According to Symantec technical staff, crashes or system hang-ups are
most likely to occur when you change what you were doing in a program
and invoke a different function. Coincidentally, that's also when you
are most vulnerable to data loss.

A Windows application is like an automobile transmission--most
problems arise when you shift gears. As long as you type along in
first gear, your word processor has very little complexity to
arbitrate. Hang-ups are most likely to occur when you shift into a
print job, spelling check, or other routine that causes it to load new
code and data and pass instructions among subroutines.

Ironically, it seems to be human nature to postpone using the Save
command until you've run a spelling check, printed the file, or
launched a Web browser for a quick fact check. The result is that we
usually wait one keystroke too long to save.

The admonition to save frequently doesn't cover this contingency. If
you want to reduce drastically your need to use CrashGuard, Symantec
tech support staff recommends a quick file save "whenever you change
what you were doing."
