My thoughts looking at that are oh my god, how much money the government could spend on that. You're talking to someone who'd like to kill the Mars program.

If its such a great idea, let's Space Island Group go with it. Good luck and more power to them. They can invest private money, you can invest in it if they ever sell stock, and pay for all the technology. If you're successful, you and other investors will get rich. Even someone skeptical like me, might invest a token amount as a lottery ticket.

You mention the internet and space program spinoffs, let me point out the key there is that things became privatized and commercialized.
