Dan Quayle's Memorial Day Speech
My fellow Americans, let me thank you for allowing me to speak today about one of America's most important holidays: Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is very important to our history, because history was made on that day. In fact, it was quite memorable history, perhaps that's why they call it Memorial Day. But I guess that's an issue for historians. I prefer not to look at history myself, but to the future. You see, the future is where the future of our country lies...
Returning to Memorial Day, however, many think it is a day set aside to memorialize World War II, but that is not entirely true. You see, Memorial Day was set aside as a very special day because it is memorable and it should never leave the consciousness of any true American. Not that you're not an American if you don't think of Memorial Day, you're just not a true American. Although, I suppose you can be a Canadian or a Mexican or a German or a New Zealander and still think of Memorial Day... it just wouldn't have the same meaning, that's all.
Now, we can all see how important Memorial Day is to all of us. And that is good. It is the way it's supposed to be. I mean, what would we have if we didn't have Memorial Day? We'd have nothing to remember, that's all. You might ask, "would that really be a bad thing"? My friend, all I can say in response is what some of my friends said at the United Negro College Fund, "A mind is a terrible thing..."
Have a Happy Memorial Day, everyone, and God Bless America! |
