Aurorae are due to incoming energy...ionizing atmospheric constituents that glow. Color depending on the frequency characteristics of each constituent.

The newly observed TLE, Ghosts, show the return of that energy back up through the global electric circuit to the ionosphere.

Like reverse aurorae -

If ghosts are a new phenomenon and not just "newly observed", it would be a "sign" of how far things have gone.
