Never rule that out in my case.<g> Only, to get to the BIOS screens, you have to switch from the UBS keyboard that's normally on here to an old PS-2 type that's had all the letter labels faded out and is a pain to use. Otherwise the keyboard doesn't come to life until Windows is almost completely loaded and all the pounding on the Del key has zero effect.
Motherboards (even with new memory) are cheap, and a brain transplant, while too time consuming to do immediately, is not that much more trouble than a thorough dissection of the current system or much more costly than paying someone (with more expertise) to do it for me.
