Sun,

There is no reason why the Dems cannot own 60+% of the population *and* the states. Sticking with healthcare, education, and better income equality will go a long way to fix the problem and is compatible with their roots. The parts Dems have to give up are the more GOP leanings that is best represented by HRC supporters - namely globalization, overt H1B visas, and anti-manufacturing policies...I'd throw in the trigger-happy missile diplomacy in there too, though it is not as big of an issue domestically - it can still lead the party to wage very unpopular wars. There was another great article in the Atlantic on that.
I agree with what you say here. The Republicans are better, though, at sticking with a negative message than they are about dealing with a positive message. The Democrats, after the ACA passed, let the Republicans set the message about the ACA and then the Dems did not defend it as they should have. It remains the most galling thing about the last few election cycles. I would talk to people about individual things in the ACA and they would be supportive but then talk about ObamaCare and all of a sudden it is like you grew horns.

Let us hope that the Dems bring in some new leadership that knows how to message things properly. I am afraid the present group doesn't have a clue and we may end up the Republicans being more popular in 2 years if the proper message isn't able to be crafted by the next election. The media has a hand in this as well. They have to stop all this false equivalency stuff they are doing and report on what is going on, not on what people's talking points.
