Slavery and industrialization are incompatible. They would have changed on their own and for the better. They could not have ended up worse than Mexico is today.

There is a large literature which addresses precisely this question. Fairly complex issues vetted very thoroughly. You might want to read it to get a better grip on the arguments. Sam strikes me, from his posts, as knowing where to start.
